Five years after the release of his debut, Benjamin Francis Leftwich haTras returned with a second album, ‘After The Rain’.

It’s being led by ‘Tilikum’, the album’s first track and a track written in the wake of the death of Benjamin’s father. In a post shared on Facebook, he explained that the event, “totally broke me”. “I was broken for a while,” he continues, “but putting what I wanted to say into songs has helped carry me back into the world again.”

Fragile and steeped in emotion, ‘Tilikum’ was written opposite his father’s old house and produced by Charlie Andrews (Alt-J, Money) – you can stream it below via Spotify.

‘After The Rain’ follows Benjamin’s 2011 debut album ‘Last Smoke Before The Snowstorm’ – it’s set for release on August 19th via Dirty Hit Records. Ahead of that, Benjamin’s lined up a mammoth spring tour – dates for that are below the player, with tickets on sale Monday.

Morgan Delt – Phase Zero (2016)

Sub Pop
Psychedelic Rock
2016-08-26
WEBRip V0 MP3

The invocation of classic west coast psychedelia that permeates Morgan Delt’s Sub Pop debut LP feels like a continuous sunrise, never concealing its influences yet perfectly putting its songs through a gauzy lens that blurs and obscures. Is such a thing even possible after witnessing umpteen reverb-jockeys creating their own take on the genre? Can anything truly different be done in the realm of being both original and reverent, wearing favorite records and artists’ moves on one’s sleeve? Definitely the case with our man here. After releasing a 6-song cassette in 2013 followed by a full length for the Trouble In Mind label, the California native now fine-tunes his sound world outwardly rather than honing in on a specific trajectory, allowing all of said influences to coexist together in a unique yet undoubtedly Californian vision.

The resulting 10-song collection, performed entirely by Delt, recorded in his Topanga Canyon studio, and mastered by JJ Golden, is a home-fi construction with a more subtle, brain-tickling character than its predecessor, and somewhat reflects a realist take on the flower power fantasy of 1967. Doused in echo and haze, slow chords lap in like Pacific waves, flanked by gentle whispers of multi-tracked, cooing vox, phased guitars and fuzz that calmly surrounds the listener’s head less than it jabs at the cortex.

The great thing about Delt’s approach to such history is (and sorry to sound harsh) that unlike too many of his so-called L.A. psych-rock peers, there’s no costume involved, no application of a conjured identity to match a specific image. He’s no psychedelic Civil War re-enactor, so to speak. It’s subtle and tactful revisionism without using psychedelia as a crutch/easy marketing tool and letting the sounds come out and make their own case.

It takes a creative mind to make psychedelic rock music – tablas, drones, hallucinatory vocal effects, and all – without slipping into cliché, but Delt can transport what would normally be a dark-n-druggy blanket into a much more optimistic and friendly listening experience. Despite his voice being channelled through hallucinatory effects, it’s warm and inviting, projecting a sense of hope (particularly in “Some Sunsick Day,” which evokes the hopeful “We’ll Meet Again” as the world explodes at the end of Dr. Strangelove, later covered by the Byrds). It’s more or less just an invite to watch the sun rise too.

Released on 5th August 2016 via new label Amour Foo, Boys Forever’s self-titled album is a tumultuous collection of splintering pop songs, underpinned by acid tongued lyrics and shivering vitriol, written and performed in its entirety by Doyle.

Having been a member of various bands for over a decade, Boys Forever is Doyle’s first solo project. Though born from disillusionment and despair and the insecurities of a brand new start, the resulting album is paradoxically sparky, gorgeous, swooning garage-pop, a perfect balance of bitter and sweet, happy and sad. Recorded by Andrew Schubert (togetherPANGEA, Wand, No Parents) at Golden Beat studios Los Angeles, the record captures the LA sun, while retaining the melancholic onslaught of the London winter in which it was written.

The ‘Voice In My Head’ video is a snapshot of Patrick’s visits to Los Angeles. He says: “Having recorded the album during overnight sessions the year before, I felt that when I returned to Los Angeles in March I wanted to see more of the city. My friend Mat picked me up and we drove around all day, trying to visit as many typically LA places as we could. We went to the Observatory, Hollywood High and Santa Monica Pier. Mat cut the footage together with some that I shot during recording sessions last year at Golden Beat in Glassell Park.”

Gypsy & The Cat – Virtual Islands (2016)

Alsatian
Indie, Dream-Pop, Synthpop, New Wave

WEBRip V0 MP3

Melburnian electro-pop whizzes Gypsy & The Cat have announced the release details for their third studio full-length, Virtual Islands, due out this August on their own indie label, Alsatian.

Four years on from their acclaimed sophomore effort, The Late Blue, Virtual Islands is an album that took Gypsy & The Cat — aka Xavier Bacash and Lionel Towers — to unexpected places, both sonically and literally, after the pair spent a spell abroad in Japan.

According to Bacash, the cultural and environmental upheaval was just what the doctor ordered for the band’s head-space in making this record.

“Partly there was time [in Japan], and, y’know, we came home and finished off maybe another three or four tracks from that point, so there’s a part of the album that was influenced by that place,” Bacash told The Music. “And I guess it’s just the way that they think in Japan; the way that they dress, the way that they interact with each other. Like, it’s such a bizarre environment to walk around in as a Westerner, and the isolation of the city and the creativity that’s all around you, it just inspires you, I think, subconsciously.

“You kind of walk past people or go through streets and alleyways and, just subconsciously, I feel like it was influencing me in different ways. And then when you go into the studio and sit down at a synthesizer or whatever, you just naturally are not as entertained by chord progressions or sounds that you once were, and the end product is something a bit more obscure, I think. I don’t know if there was a specific difference, you know, if we sort of heard sounds and then tried to do that, or there were bands we were listening to from Japan — it was just more an overall feeling, the change.”

“It’s like taking drugs for the first time,” he continued. “Like, psychedelic drugs. You are not the same person after that. You’re not mentally deranged or anything, but you definitely see things differently because, for a period of time, you saw things differently. So I think there’s a real aftermath, or a grogginess, to being in Japan, creatively, that kind of steered the ship for the record to a degree and just made us push ourselves to feel more entertained by what we were doing.

“I think a lot of artists make music and it’s very tactical, and they might not really love what they’re doing; you know, they’re trying to make a career out of it. But making something that’s pretty wild but, like, you can listen to… for us, it was about making something that, in 10 years’ time, we’d still listen to and be really proud of, and I think that’s why it’s just taken such a long time, because we didn’t want to be a part of any movement or a moment in music.”

Another reason for the extra time taken on this record, Bacash says, is because of an overall shift in the band’s approach to their work, having at this advent asserted themselves as a wholly independent force.

“It’s really, really different because we’re very independent now,” he said. “We don’t have management, so it’s been, like, four years of grinding away and trying to perfect it and come to a place that we felt like it’s represented the way we’re thinking, whereas in the past we haven’t had as much time, and we’ve probably had a bit more pressure on us.

“So this record is definitely a truer representation of the way we’ve been thinking over the last four years without any filtering or anything like that, like anyone telling us to do something a certain way, or songs like this and that; it’s pretty much just our seven, eight, nine years of production experience and being-in-a-band experience coming into this moment.”

Gypsy & The Cat will release Virtual Islands on Friday 5 August on Alsatian. The album was mixed by Bacash with assistance from Dave Fridman (Tame Impala, MGMT & more) for Inside Your Mind, and mastered by Mike Marsh (Chemical Brothers, Basement Jaxx & more)
